What iPhones have Touch ID?

Apple may have replaced Touch ID with the current Face ID technology on many of its flagship devices, but you will still find many iPhones on the market with a fingerprint sensor in their possession, the main way to unlock them.

Next, we wanted to tell you what each new generation of Apple Touch ID has contributed to their phones and how the different versions affect the operation and performance of each device, now that with the arrival of the iPhone 12 , technology says goodbye to Apple phones.

What is Touch ID?

This technology was first announced with the arrival of the iPhone 5s, whose presentation dates from September 2013. That year, Apple replaced the classic ‘Home’ button with one that incorporated a fingerprint sensor on the surface to facilitate your access.

In this way, the company allowed users to unlock their devices by simply holding their thumb or any other finger on the surface of the button, in addition to having the function that the ‘Home’ button had been offering associated with it.

The surface is made of sapphire crystal, which makes it incredibly resistant to scratches, which is necessary if the fingerprint reader is to be damaged.

Touch ID technology works on the iPhone and iPad so that the fingerprints that users scan on the iPhone are stored in what Apple calls a ‘secure enclave’ that is built into the device’s processor to guarantee your identity.

This means that Apple does not have access to your fingerprint information at any time, since all security is carried out entirely on the device and does not travel to the cloud. It is the way to guarantee greater security to access the terminal.

The introduction of Touch ID eliminated the need to enter passwords every time the iPhone was accessed, and it also allowed App Store purchases to be confirmed with a finger, rather than having to re-enter the password or PIN.

With the introduction of Apple Pay alongside the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in 2016, Touch ID became the primary way to authenticate payments. The only exemption was the iPhone 5s, which although it did have Touch ID, does not have the NFC capabilities required to support Apple Pay.

Touch ID quickly moved to Apple’s tablets or iPads in 2014, coinciding with the arrival of the iPad Mini 3. It then appeared on every new iPhone and iPad model until 2017, when the iPhone X replaced it with Face ID.

From this moment, Apple also introduced the iPad Pro Face ID line, replacing what had been offering Touch ID. Later, Touch ID technology would also come to Mac, with the 2016 MacBook Pro as the premiere model with a Touch ID bar.

There have been two generations of Touch ID technology, the second being introduced with the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus in 2015, and it boasts speeds up to two times faster than its iPhone 5s predecessor. The last iPhone to implement it has been the iPhone SE 2020 presented in early 2020 ( see review ).
