Wet laptop : What to do if you spill liquid on your laptop

With many laptops costing over $ 1,000, it is not surprising that most users worry about making the device last as long as possible.

However, sometimes unpredictable things happen, such as liquid spilling onto our precious laptop, especially if you usually have water or coffee on your desk while you work or study.

If water, coffee or any other liquid has gotten into your device, it is important not to panic. By following these steps, you will likely minimize any potential damage and have the best chance that your notebook will remain fully functional.

1. Turn off the laptop

If you’ve suffered water damage, the worst thing you can do is persist in trying to use your computer. Even if it still appears to be working normally, there is a very real risk that there may be long-term damage.

For more than a few drops of water, it is important to turn off the device immediately. This can be done by opening the start menu (Windows) / clicking the Apple icon (Mac) or simply holding down the power button until the screen turns off.

2. Remove the power cord and accessories

If you were charging your device when the disaster struck, be sure to unplug it before proceeding.

Do you have a mouse, USB adapter or any other accessory connected? You will also want to remove them. Worrying enough that your laptop may be damaged, you don’t want to replace all of your accessories too!

Give them a quick clean and get them out of harm’s way.

3. Clean any excess liquid from the outside

The next step should be to try to remove as much excess liquid from the laptop as possible. Clean anything obvious from the surface of the device and then turn it upside down.

Better to use a lint-free cloth cloth or towel for this. Avoid the temptation to use a hair dryer or other device that expels hot air unless water has been spilled. Although it can help test for excess moisture, it is much more likely to cause long-term damage as they are more conductive and corrosive.

4. Repair it professionally

With the steps above, you’ve done your best to prevent further damage in the short term.

It’s worth seeing at this point if the device will turn on, so reconnect the power supply and see if it turns on. Either way, it’s probably best to have it checked by a professional to make sure the device will be safe to use in the long run.

If you still have a valid warranty, this is the perfect time to take advantage of free repairs. Accidental damage like this is typically covered by most policies, but it’s worth checking from where you bought it.

If not, it’s worth finding a repair shop that specializes in the brand of laptop you own.

There is another thing to note: if you suspect that any liquid has come into contact with the battery, it should be replaced immediately. In addition to damaging the battery, liquids can make the device unsafe to use.

Prevent future damage

Perhaps this accident has made you realize that liquid near an exposed laptop is a risk that you are no longer willing to take.

Unless you want to walk across the room for a drink, the good news is that there are a few ways to make your current laptop more waterproof.

A keyboard cover can help protect the keys from liquid damage, without affecting the typing experience too much. For only € 6.65 , this silicone cover from Tracsmart is a good option.

Of course, protecting your device when not in use should also be a priority. Take a look at our roundup of the best laptop bags for some good options.

Fully waterproof notebooks are relatively few and far between, although there are some that fall into the “rugged” category. If this is a priority, we would recommend checking out the Panasonic Toughbook.
