The best Review HP Envy 13 (2020)

The HP Envy 13 (2020) is a true all-rounder laptop that comes in the form of an ultralight, a large screen, and plenty of storage space. However, although these data look good on paper, what is your behavior in real life situations?

We have used them for a few days to see how it works in daily use, working from home, playing games and doing all kinds of tasks related to video editing. Discover our assessment in the review we offer you.

Design and build

The best thing about the HP Envy 13 (2020) design is undoubtedly the 13-inch IPS FHD display with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution, which comes with slim bezels that provide an impressive 88% screen-to-body ratio.

By reducing the bezels, HP manages to offer a more compact notebook if it fits in a notebook body clearly focused on ensuring maximum mobility. The design is clean and uncluttered, maintaining the traditional lines of the brand.

It’s also familiar to HP fans, with a sandblasted silver anodized finish and a size that can be operated with one hand thanks to its weight of just 1.3 kilograms.

The Envy 13 (2020) chassis is made of aluminum, which feels strong and durable. Like the 2019 Envy 13 variant, the trackpad is made of plastic instead of glass, but it still looks clean and responds very well to touch and gestures which in the end is what counts.

Already on the keyboard, we have the adjustable backlight function through three different levels of intensity to be able to set it to your liking. The keys themselves have good travel and offer a good response to use; We had no problems with the pulsations.

Getting a bit fussy, some of the keyboard shortcuts are in strange places (the ‘Print’ screen is included in the ‘Shift’ key under ‘Enter’, rare). But otherwise, you will not find more similar surprises.

The system used for cooling keeps the internal components fairly cool when needed, but it is a bit noisy if you’re working quietly and the notebook is performing some CPU-intensive task.

The Envy also has a Bang & Olufsen sound system that is powerful and produces good levels of bass, something that this type of light equipment usually fails to do. The downside is that they are located at the bottom unlike last year’s Envy generation.

One aspect that HP seems to have reinforced for users is the privacy settings included in the HP Envy 13. Not only do you get a fingerprint scanner built into the key, but you can also manage the webcam and microphone with function keys. .

The quality of the integrated webcam is only 720p, but it acts efficiently and with enough quality to have a good video call and appreciate the details. The audio from the dual microphones just works for your communications.

The laptop has a dedicated HP power connector to charge its battery, instead of opting to use the USB C port as other models and brands already do. Compatibility is lost but in its favor it must be said that the adapter is compact.

Other ports included are the Thunderbolt 3 USB C, 2 USB Type-A, a headphone jack, as well as a microSD card reader. Unfortunately, the new Envy does not have an HDMI port so you will have to use Thunderbolt for a second screen.

Being a 2-in-1 computer, we have overlooked mentioning that the screen is tactile with up to 10 touch points, which is an advantage when using it as a tablet or together with the digital pen.

The Envy 13’s display features a glossy finish, with a maximum of 1000 nits. Being a reflective panel, there is a lot of glare, especially if you are using the device outdoors in bright sunlight.

Raising the brightness to the maximum does not fix the problem too much, with the incentive that you will get it to negatively affect the battery life and you will have to charge it earlier than usual.

Performance and autonomy

The Envy 13 (2020) is available with three different finishes including the ability to choose a 4K display. You can also choose between an Intel Core i5 or i7 processor, 8GB or 16GB RAM, up to 1TB storage, and the NVIDIA GeForce MX350 graphics option for the most powerful configuration.

If HP stands out for something, it is for the high customization capacity offered, with the option of omitting the touch screen completely, renouncing privacy filters, including a dedicated graphics card, or even changing the FHD screen for a better 4K quality screen.

We tested the mid-range HP Envy 13 (HP Envy 13-ba0006na), which is based on the performance of the Intel Core i7-1065G7 processor and houses integrated Intel Iris Plus graphics. Combined with 8GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, there’s plenty of room for downloading games and software , as well as storing documents for a long time.

Below, the graph of our benchmark tests offers us relevant information about its performance and how it is positioned against its main competitors such as Dell’s XPS 13, Lenovo’s Yoga C740 or Huawei’s MateBook X Pro.

We took the opportunity to use a basic video editing program such as Adobe Premiere Rush and we had some problems after several hours of continuous use. In this sense, it is advisable to opt for a model with more RAM and a more powerful processor.

We also took the opportunity to play Planet Zoo with the graphics set to Ultra mode and the frame rates decreased slightly during the animated scenes. Nonetheless, the laptop manages to get out of the situation gracefully.

It is clear that the most economical version of the Envy 13 does not have the same capabilities as its two higher models, but you should know that if you opt for the entry-level model, it will offer you enough performance for the most common tasks.

When it comes to autonomy, the tests show us that you have the ability to stay active throughout the day. Our benchmarks gave us a respectable 10 hours and 12 minutes uptime, in line with what HP claims.

The charging speed of its battery is not slow either, since with only 30 minutes of connection we managed to raise the battery capacity to 53% charge. Once again, if you are conservative with the brightness of the screen, you will improve the times considerably.

As it is an HP laptop, you will not have problems with the software . It comes standard with Windows 10 Home and you get dedicated apps from HP to better manage it, plus a basic version of McAfee LiveSafe and a one-month free trial of Microsoft 365.

Prices and where to buy

The HP Envy 13 range has different prices depending on its configuration. The model we tested with Core i5 10210U and 8 GB of RAM is currently on sale at a price of € 899.

If you opt for a model with more oomph that offers a superior Core i7 10510U processor, accompanied by 16 GB of RAM and dedicated GeForce MX350 graphics, the price reaches € 1,199, something worth evaluating if you can afford it.

If you are still a student, you do not care too much about the extra power, but if you handle editing programs or photographic retouching with enough frequency, the medium and higher specifications will be your best options.

When looking at the competitors, the top two are Dell’s XPS 13 9300 and Huawei’s MateBook X Pro. They both offer very similar specs to the Envy, but feature bolder designs and higher resolution display options.

However, keep in mind that both models can be much more expensive, as is the case with Dell’s XPS 13 whose prices start at € 1,329 if you opt for the configuration with the 11th generation Core i5 chip and 16 GB of RAM.

The Envy 13 (2020) model with a 4K screen will also be marketed in our country, along with the novelty of its 11th generation Intel Core processors and Thunderbolt 4-type port.

HP is clearly committed to maintaining the traditional design that has worked so well so far in its Envy range, while providing it with the latest technologies to reach the market in order to remain competitive.

Thus, The Envy 13 (2020) is not entirely perfect. The fan is a bit noisy at times, the screen is prone to glare, and it’s a shame that the 4K panel version has a somewhat exorbitant price tag.

However, compared to its main rivals with similar specifications, the price is extremely competitive, so you will be acquiring a powerful ultralight notebook that maintains the design and lightness as a hallmark.
