Gigabyte Aero 15 OLED XB review
For a while now, it seems that we have all realized the versatility that a laptop can offer in our homes. Unlike the use of a desktop PC, it allows you to move it between rooms and share its use comfortably.
Along with this multi-user facet, if you choose to acquire a configuration like the one we are dealing with, you will realize that both the professional and the recreational part are covered by its high performance and versatility.
It’s something you’ll find across the entire Gigabyte Aero range, with high power ingredients and a 4K UHD display that’s a great bet to ensure low latency in the game, along with true-to-life color rendering by ensuring Pantone Xrite calibration .
Design and manufacturing quality
We will not be deceived, since its dimensions are considerable. In the case of a 15-inch laptop, its weight reaches 2 kilograms, something that will not prevent you from moving it around the house comfortably, and on time, on one of your trips.
Its thickness of 20 mm is also outstanding, but necessary to guarantee efficient ventilation of its internal components. Despite this, we see how Gigabyte works the design to reduce the thickness where it can be allowed, as it is in the palm rest.
With brushed matte black aluminum finishes that eliminate the presence of fingerprints, it has a pair of hinges attached to the screen to set the viewing angle you want, with enough tension not to wobble at the first change.
Add here that you can open the laptop with one hand without having to hold the base of it while doing so. It is something that I like to highlight from the teams that really comply with it, because it is still a detail in terms of accessibility.
The edges of the screen are small and maintain a finish that makes it possible for the fully closed laptop to protect the panel. To do this, the webcam had to be moved to the keyboard part, just above the function keys.
It is a position that we have already seen in other models such as the Huawei MateBook, and although it does not seem the most natural, it is true that it allows the screen frames to be thinner. The Aero 15 also adds a manual tab to lock it.
In line with this, note that a fingerprint reader is located in the upper left corner to facilitate access to the system.
For practical purposes, we liked the response that the keys offer, with a short but efficient stroke, as well as being silent. They are backlit and, through the control software , we can set a wide variety of display effects.
For its part, the touchpad offers a generous area on which you can deploy gestures with your fingers, as well as being able to quickly block its use if you want to prevent an unexpected movement from taking your best game game.
A 4K OLED screen that says it all
To tell the truth, until now we have not been big fans of laptops that adopt 4K screens in their configuration due to the strong impact it has on the battery life of the equipment, a situation that makes it not worth the extra pixel density. .
However, with the Aero 15, we are pleased to say that the battery life has been better than we expected to be a 4K panel, something that we will talk about later in its corresponding section.
In this way, with the 15.6-inch screen size it is possible to set a generous resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels that will make working with a mosaic multi-window arrangement a pleasant experience, all of them perfectly readable.
Another relevant fact that reminds us of the brand with its corresponding sticker (the Aero has many decorations on it) is that it offers a factory Pantone Xrite color calibration, a check that is carried out with a manual process.
Gigabyte suggests that its competitors only do batch panel testing, while customer service is about ensuring that every unit on the market has passed the extensive fit and calibration tests.
It is for this reason that the Aero 15 and its older brother Aero 17 are computers with advanced gaming settings that aim to captivate professional users who create content. The hardware is really meant for these and not just the gamers.
Its Samsung AMOLED panel features HDR 400 calibration which is the entry level to meet HDR specifications and 100% sRGB display. Gigabyte also adds 100% Adobe RGB color gamut support.
Similarly, the AU Optronics B173ZAN03.2 panel is also a 10-bit classified panel, which means it will boost 1070 million color display. For practical purposes, the vividness of the colors is surprising.
Games with higher requirements in special effects, such as Final Fantasy, Metro Exodus or Crysis 3 look great with all their graphic options set to the highest level. Check out our guide to the best computer games .
The screen is capable of drawing all kinds of textures, lighting effects and reflections, especially highlighting the effects of rain or water on stage and moving the graphics at a rate of 60 fps in 4K quality.
This is obviously possible thanks to its high specifications, with a 2.3 GHz speed Intel Core i7-10875H processor, accompanied by a dedicated Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 graphics with 8 GB of GDDR6 memory.
Content creators need high doses of connectivity, and this is another section in their favor. Taking advantage of the greater thickness that these gaming profile laptops present (see our guide) , Gigabyte has managed to include all kinds of connectors in the Aero 15, to the point that you will not miss any.
We see on the left side a full-size HDMI 2.0 port, another mini DisplayPort 1.4, a USB 3.2 Gen1 Type A, the headphone and microphone minijack and the Gigabit Ethernet port necessary to guarantee the wired connection.
On the other side, we find two USB 3.2 ports, a USB C (Thunderbolt 3), a UHS-II SD card reader for photographers and creatives who have to download large RAW images, as well as the proprietary power connector Gigabyte.
Well and what can I do with all this? Both the DisplayPort and HDMI are connected to the GeForce RTX graphics card, while the Thunderbolt 3 connects to Intel’s integrated graphics chip. In total, up to three external displays are supported.
On the back, everything is ventilation grills next to the brand’s logo, as happens at the bottom of the laptop, where a pair of fans with their corresponding nozzles are responsible for expelling hot air to the outside, coinciding with the CPU and GPU of the system.
Performance and graphics
We have already highlighted Gigabyte’s choice to equip this laptop with the latest in next-generation Intel Core processors, advanced graphics, large amounts of RAM, as well as use of the 32GB + 512GB Intel Optane drive for the storage.
With this campus, we decided to proceed with the performance tests at a value that is not exactly a practice of overclocking the CPU clock speed, but it is a usage profile in gaming mode to contemplate how far the team can go. .
To do this, we use the complete utility tool provided by Gigabyte with which it is possible to manage all these values related to the system, and not only modify the ventilation or the lighting of your keyboard.
Recall that this Intel CPU allows you to set speeds of up to 5.1 GHz on time through overclocking practices , which allows you to reach much higher performance values on time. In Cinebench R15, the Aero 15 gave us an index value of 213, which raises it to the top of the table.
Since the laptop is intended for content creation, we did some more GPU-focused testing. One of them is Octane RTX 2019 whose results showed us that the choice of GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q graphics is a wise choice.
With a value of 573.7 it is above other direct competitors such as the HP Omen X 2XS laptop, the Acer Predator Triton 500 or the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 itself with Ryzen 9 4900HS graphics, one of its main competitors in this section . Observe the following graph results:
Autonomy in all its areas of use
The last battery section is no less important than the previous ones as it is a laptop, although it is a configuration that you will take out of your home on rare occasions. Here he showed us again his great value when it comes to guaranteeing autonomy.
Playing video constantly and with its 4K screen active, we managed to exceed 7 hours and 5 minutes of use, times that are difficult to extrapolate to other teams due to the type of screen that the Aero 15 implements.
However, another real-life test we carried out was the use of intensive applications such as Photoshop and Premiere, with which the CPU is stressed at high levels and with which we had autonomy for almost three hours of use.
Play hard or try to render videos and we would say that the times will be reduced considerably below 2 hours of use at best. With a typical office and navigation use, the times will be between 5 and 6 hours.
After what we have seen, we can affirm that the Aero 15 is an incredible laptop in order to satisfy the needs that professionals who usually create content in the highest sense of the word must meet, handling advanced editing and photography programs.
With a fast CPU and advanced graphics, accompanied by a perfectly calibrated 4K screen, we can safely say that you have an advanced tool at hand.
You should think that acquiring a monitor of this type with Pantone certification, together with a desktop computer with similar specifications, will lead to having to shell out a high amount of money, which will probably exceed the purchase price of the Aero 15.
However, if you’re only going to be using the gear for the more playful part of gaming, other alternative options like the Acer Predator Helios 300 (recently reviewed) or the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 are likely to be a better option at a lower price.
