The new Xiaomi Mi 9 is an incredible phone at an incredible price. It is faster than the Galaxy S10 and is much closer than ever for the S10 specifications, so it is difficult to understand the huge difference between the two brands.
Mi 9 introduces many design changes, including on-screen fingerprint sensors in the form of standard, super-fast (and wired) wireless charging, a large screen that takes a large proportion of the body, and a new triple- The lens camera is back, which contains a large 48MP lens.
Performance is better, photography is better, design is better. Everything is better in the amazing Xiaomi Mi 9.
A few years ago some people had heard of Shiaomi in Spain or Latin America, but seeing our fictional crystal ball, we are confident that in some years it has completely changed the smartphone market in the whole world.
Xiaomi is a Chinese mega-brand, but still quite young, and its smartphones, which are now officially available in Europe, weaken the world’s leaders in such a way that they can not expect to compete easily .
The only company that is remotely with OnePlus is with its 6T, but that phone can not be compared to Xiaomi Mi 9.
And what’s really lost: waterproofing? Some extra pixels you can barely see? It’s really worth reading further so you know why you should get Xiaomi Mi 9 with S10 or iPhone XS.
This is not just one of the best Chinese phones, but the best phone duration is. Won one of our prestigious CMM awards for the best technology on display, and is now ranked third in the best camera phones of all time.
If you are interested in buying on Chinese websites like Banggood, then you can get Mi 9 very cheap. The 64GB global version, which is sold on this website, can be purchased from € 359.24.
With this price, the MI 9 has been deployed as the best quality priced smartphone on the market, competing with OnePlus 6T and HonorView 20.
The most obvious difference in the Mi 9 is the screen, which is now larger and taller than the Mi 8 and covers a larger surface, with a reduced chin and a significantly smaller notch.
It incorporates a fingerprint sensor on the screen, previously seen only in the Mi 8 Pro, and adds some personalization options to the always active screen.
Naturally, this means that the previous sensor has been removed from the back, but there are even more changes: the LED flash has been moved to the bottom of the camera assembly and the addition of a third lens inside.
The arrangement is narrower but also taller, and stands out more than before. When you see the specifications you will understand why, since Xiaomi has gotten into an incredible 48MP lens.
Around the edges the new Mi 9 looks much brighter, with a highly polished metal frame that is narrower on the edges with glass that curves not only to the left and right, but also up and down. The IR blaster device has been reinstalled at the top edge of the phone, and on the left there is a new button to call the Google Assistant.
There are also new color options, and although the sample we obtained for this review is (sadly) the standard Piano Black, there are also two “holographic” designs (read: iridescent) in Ocean Blue (ocean blue) and Lavender Violet (violet lavender).
Some changes can not be seen with the naked eye, since they are inside. The 2018 Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 (a 10nm chip) has been changed for the 855 (7nm) this year. This offers improvements of up to 45% in overall processing power and 20% in graphics.
Wireless charging is also added, which previously was only in the Mi Mix line.
Xiaomi was accused in the past of being the “Chinese Apple“, plagiarizing the world-famous apple company, however, we can say that since then the Chinese brand has come a long way in terms of design that allows it to differentiate itself from Apple .
In fact, today we ask ourselves: why would a company want its devices to look like iPhones when they could look like Xiaomi phones?
While Apple is still stuck in a monolithic hell, Xiaomi has followed some of its fellow Android device makers listening to the wishes of its consumers and consumers who were praying for a larger screen.
In the Mi 9, the notch that had previously been replaced by a subtle drop of water, centered on the top of the screen. It houses only the selfie camera , while the speaker has been moved to a position where it is difficult to find: at the extreme edge where the screen meets the frame.
Xiaomi has expanded the panel, from 6.21in to 6.39in. However, the size and weight of the phone has hardly changed, the Mi 9 is only 7.6 mm thick (though it seems to be thin for its more curvature) and actually few grams are of less weight.
They have achieved this impressive achievement of design in three ways: first, reducing the chin of the phone by 40% to only 3.6 mm; Second, increase the aspect ratio of high already 18.7: 9 to 19.5: 9; And third, unfortunately, 100 mAH scrapping from the battery. The result is a super high screen-to-body ratio of 90.7%, and a design that not only looks much better but also more convenient to use.
All these glasses are still a magnet for finger prints, although in our tests with MI 9 we find it less noticeable than Mi8 Pro which we use day after day.
Xiaomi has also taken steps to improve our two biggest holdings with that phone, improving the fingerprint sensor on the screen and always made some improvements on the screen.
Xiaomi says that this new fingerprint sensor works faster than 25% faster than the Mi8 Pro. However, there is still a lot to be done for fingerprint sensor to work smoothly, and we often find that our impatience urged us to dial the pin code instead.
Xiaomi uses an AMOLED panel from Samsung, which allows it to offer a mixture of vibrant, influential and saturated colors, which we love with dark black and crunchy white. The resolution is 2340×1080.
It has a distinctive brightness of 430 CD / M2 (we measure 414 CD / M2), versus 60,000: 1 and version 2.0 of Xiaomi’s ‘Readlight’ and ‘Reading Mode’ functions. And it is protected from Gorilla Glass 6, which is twice as much as Gorilla Glass 5 according to Corning.
Around the edges, there is still no headphone jack (the box has 3.5mm adapters), but there are two new features, as well as an enhanced audio from the built-in speaker, which now has a deep bass and uses dynamic sound Increasing by 100%.
By default, a button on the left edge activates Google Helper (If you are buying a Chinese version of this phone, you will have Xiaomi access to its AI client). It can be quickly changed to launch the camera, torch or previous app, or to activate Google Search or to activate ‘reading’ mode or to activate Google Search.
The second addition is an IR blaster, which was a common feature of Xiaomi phone, but it was aborted in Mi8. Now it has been restored, this sensor works in conjunction with the ‘My Remote’ application to control many devices in your house. .
We have been working with our Sony TV and our DVD player, but unfortunately it does not recognize our streaming box or TV box Roku.
On the back, Xiaomi has refined the edges, which are now curved all over. Despite this big screen, the Mi9 makes it more comfortable to hold in one hand, but the bright surface of the mirror is incredibly slippery, there is nothing more than the assembly of the extruder chamber for easy grip.
Although we prefer that the camera is at the height of the phone’s body, but we know how difficult it is to do this work with 48Mp sensor on the board. The new set is more spreading than before, but the unit is protected from damage with a resistant sapphire crystal.
A hello ring adds a touch of the orange ring around the top lens, and it is something we had previously seen with red outer rings in Mi 8 Pro and 18-carat gold details in the Mi-Mix in Xiaomi.
In addition to some of these objections – the slippery surface, the camera’s main bulge, the fingerprint, the sub-quad-HD resolution and the fingerprint sensor on the screen which does not work 100% – the only thing we actually designed for Mi9’s premium Can criticize which lack of impermeability.
But if you keep in mind that adding this type of function will increase the price, then we will be more than happy to have it. Maybe we will see it in possible 10 Mi.
In the world of smart phones there are only a handful of processors on the heap. Apple’s A12 bionic leads the group in terms of synthetic benchmark performance, followed by the Kyrian 980 used by Huawei and Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, which is used by almost every other major phone in the market. All three are 7 nm processors, and all three produce levels of performance, with which no failures can be detected.
(Samsung also has its own processor, found in the British version of Galaxy S10 with Exynos 9820, and then MediaTek, but its cheap chips are in a different league.)
In the Mi 9 Xiaomi has specified one of those chips of first level, the Snapdragon 855, but it has done with the modem X24- instead of the X50, which means that this phone is not capable of supporting 5G. (And neither are most of the world’s telephone networks, so that’s really a moot point.)
This Snapdragon chip has a clock of 2.84GHz and uses the Kryo 485 core. It is integrated with the Adreno 640 GPU and paired with 6GB of RAM and 64 or 128GB of non-expandable storage.
The Mi 9 is capable of an amazing performance, although it is below the Chinese version as the Mi 9 Explorer that has 12 GB.
We analyze it through our usual reference points and we have charted its performance compared to some of today’s most important smartphones that appear below.
No wonder it’s significantly faster than the Mi 8 and 4G Mi Mix 3 with its new processor, but the fact that it has been able to take the Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus out of the ranking is something to be proud of. for a phone that costs little more than half of its price.
We also did the Geekbench Battery Life Test on Mi9, which recorded 9 hours and 57 minutes. It is much higher than the Mi 8 (7 hours 10 minutes) received and it is also above contestants like OnePlus 6T (7 hours 26 minutes) and Galaxy S10 (4 hours 47 minutes). In the real world, it means that getting a full day of life from Mi 9 should not be a problem.
When the battery is exhausted, Mi9 cable or 20W wireless supports up to 27W charging, but Xiaomi only supplies 18W plugs, so we have not tested it. The company claims that you get up to 40% in 30 minutes, or 100% in 90 minutes.
Mi 9 includes all the bundles of connectivity with dual-frequency GPS, the above mentioned IR blaster, NFC, OTG, Bluetooth 5.0 and WiFi. It is a dual-sim, dual-standby phone, with two SIMs capable of connecting to 4G networks
The Mi 9 runs MIUI 10, which is a customized version of Android 9 Pie, the most obvious difference is the lack of an application tray, the customized drop-down notification bar, the rearrangement of the ‘Settings’ menu and the various applications and functions of Xiaomi pre-installed on the device.
There are a couple of details in which MIUI 10 is different in Mi 9 than in other Xiaomi phones that run the software. To begin with, there is the dark mode. This is one of the most fashionable software features lately, reversing the colors of the screen and reducing the battery life by up to 83%.
It can also be easier for the eyes than a bright white screen. While Google talks about adding a dark mode for the whole system in the next Android 10, Xiaomi is already there with MIUI 10 in Mi 9.
The other new feature here is something that we mentioned earlier in this review, the customizable ‘always on screen’ mode. You still do not have as much control over it as Samsung’s Galaxy phones, but now it supports color and pre-set background images. If you wish, you can schedule the AOD to turn on and off only at certain times of the day.
In other aspects this is MIUI 10 as we know it and, although it will feel unfamiliar to Android users who have never played with a Xiaomi phone before, there is much to adore here that can not be achieved in the standard Android.
Some of our favorites are Dual Apps and Second Space, which allow you to run multiple versions of applications on your phone and even block some to view them selectively.
During the configuration process you have the opportunity to choose between a full screen that supports gestures to return, return home or access open applications, or you can display these navigation options as on-screen buttons.
A split-screen mode is available in the multi-tasking menu that allows you to interact with two applications at the same time. You will also find things like the one-hand mode (reduces the size of the usable area of the screen) and the fastball in the ‘Settings‘.
The Xiaomi Mi 9 was one of the Best in Show Technical Advisors at the CMM, winner of the award, and that is something we have not regretted by looking more closely at the latest Xiaomi flagship.
With fast performance, incredible design and excellent cameras, it offers the best value for money you can find on a smartphone.
