Review: OnePlus Z : Price, Specs, and Rumors

There is increasing evidence that OnePlus is preparing to unveil a new mid-range phone called OnePlus Z, something the company has not really done since the arrival of the OnePlus X in 2015. Here is everything we know so far .

The OnePlus company has already had phone models within this mid-range, but only once and without a large portfolio of solutions. The OnePlus X came to the market as an alternative to the OnePlus 2 but at a much more competitive price.

The highlights were the use of a flagship-class chipset (the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801), rather than a dedicated mid-range chip, as well as the offer of more exotic materials in its design, with a special edition with a ceramic body. .

OnePlus X didn’t shake up the market the way the company had hoped, but its commercialization left OnePlus fans wondering if the company would ever step foot in the mid-range sector beyond the flagships where it typically moves.

Rumors increase every time the Chinese phone maker prepares to launch another device, but with the arrival of the new OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro, there is a greater feeling than ever that a new mid-range is yet to come.

First, there was talk of the possible arrival of a Lite edition of the OnePlus 8, which gave rise to the possibility of its mid-range position. Then the name was changed to OnePlus Z, which complies with the company’s nomenclature, based on letters rather than numbers, OnePlus X.

When will the OnePlus Z be released?

Truth be told, many expected its launch to coincide with the debut of the OnePlus 8 series during the first half of 2020, but ultimately this has not happened.

Whether due to the effects of the global pandemic or for some other reason, such a device did not materialize at the April launch of OnePlus 8, raising the question of whether the time has not been right now, when will it be?

Rumors of all kinds circulate on the network, although many take the form that the new OnePlus Z could hit the market throughout the month of July this year, three months after the series 8 was presented, and in a relatively quiet period for the brand.

Another source like  reports that a certain contact would have leaked that the presentation date would be July 10, with the incentive that it would be a special event held in India.

How much will the OnePlus Z cost?

At this time there is little to say about what the official prices of the phone may be, but at least, we can make an assumption based on the phones already launched and with which it could face within its range.

The OnePlus X was approximately 20% cheaper than the standard OnePlus 2 during its launch and, better yet, it was positioned just below the price of € 250.

Using the OnePlus 8 as the equivalent flagship for 2020, starting at € 709 the most basic model, the OnePlus Z, would be released at a price of around € 500, aligning with our report of the best mid-range phones of the year. .

What features will the OnePlus Z have?

As with the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro, the Z can be expected to support 5G connectivity, which has led to speculation about the hardware it will use. Initial reports pointed to MediaTek’s Dimensional 1000 or 1000L, some of the chipmaker’s first 5G SoC.

However, there are those who believe that the brand will remain faithful to Qualcomm by integrating the Snapdragon 765 or 765G chip as the chosen processor for its OnePlus Z.

If the Z opts for the MediaTek Dimensional line, it will be the first of the company’s phones not to take advantage of Qualcomm hardware. On the other, the Snapdragon 765 is not as efficient as MediaTek chips, powered by previous Cortex A76 technology, rather than the Cortex A77 cores of the 1000 and 1000L.

What will the OnePlus Z look like physically?

At the end of last year, the OnLeaks Twitter account published some CAD-based renderings of what the new OnePlus Z would look like, still called the OnePlus 8 Lite at that time.

In them, it is possible to appreciate how the front of the phone seems to have a flat screen with wider bezels compared to the current OnePlus 8 and 8 Plus, along with a single-hole front camera and central perforation.

Everything indicates that this OnePlus Z model would already have an OLED screen with a refresh rate of at least 90 Hz, as we have already been able to contemplate in the brand’s new 8 Series, where the most basic has a similar refresh rate.

The rear camera arrangement, meanwhile, presents a design with a double sensor, placed in what is a glass aligned under a frame that groups these sensors. There is also no 3.5mm headphone jack.

There is also talk of a glass back panel with curved edges and Gorilla Glass 5 2.5D protection. A USB C port would be at the bottom and it seems the company would keep the volume keypad and the usual manual notification control switch.

As far as cameras are concerned, the fact that three sensors would form part of the camera set is becoming increasingly important, with a main camera that would offer up to 48 MP, a 16 MP ultra-wide angle and a 12 MP telephoto lens.
