Google Pixel 4: is it worth your purchase?

The Pixel 4 does not sound like a surprise update to the previous generation, but improvements to its cameras may still be enough to help it claim its crown as the king of photography in a year with strong competition in the segment. Huh.

In other aspects, the Pixel 4 does not have the necessary advances to compete with the best in the market, but Google Assistant’s close integration into the operating system and new ways to handle it can make it one of the most interesting phones of the year. the ending(Review Google Pixel  4)

Google Pixel 4 Review: First Impressions

The range of Google Pixel terminals with great reputation among users for offering the ‘Pixel’ Android experience, has diminished its reputation by increasing the quality offered by its cameras in the photographic section.

However, in a year like this in which we have seen an increase in megapixel counts, telephoto lenses with excessive zoom and amazing night modes, what can Google do to stay on top?

In that context, the Pixel 4 seems curiously cautious. For the first time, it offers a telephoto lens, but it will not reach the 10x zoom. The main lens is also not 64Mp or 48Mp, as many others already offer. And yes, the Knight site is better than before, but it is not groundbreaking.

And when you come from being the best, how much improvement do you need to make? Perhaps for this reason, Google has decided to focus on Google Assistant, which is now faster, easier to activate and integrated into the operating system to reveal new ways to interact with the Pixel 4.

Price and availability

Before going into details, let’s talk about its price. Have we said that it has been presented by Google at a lower price than Pixel 3 when it was launched? Yes, you can buy it from € 759 the basic model with 5.7-inch screen , and from € 899 the 6.3-inch Pixel 4 XL.

Both models arrive with black or white finishes, except for the normal Pixel 4, which you can also buy a special edition with orange back. The other section is storage, available with 64 or 128 GB, a model that increases its price € 100.

They are quite competitive prices, especially if it is the normal Pixel 4, since it has € 50 less than the iPhone 11, the cheapest that Apple has put up for sale this year with the same storage capacity of 64 GB.

You can also compare the OnePlus 7T model, which you can find analyzed here, or for the same price, opt for the € 759 for the Huawei P30 Pro or the Samsung Galaxy S10e. This is what we all feel the new Pixel 4 provides.(Review Google Pixel 4 )

Design and construction

Google has decided not to reinforce the wheel with Pixel 4 and keep everything which has given very good results. It is for this reason that its design will be quite familiar to those who have already used or touched a pixel.

As for the finish, with fairly flat colors, you can find it in black or white, and a special version in orange with a vibrant finish between a peachy pink and neon orange from where It gets its name.

As in the Pixel 3, the power button provides a flash of color that contrasts with the main tone, but this time it leans against a matte black border that extends around the edges of the device making it stand out more. Does.

The major change in its front is, without doubt, the fact of completely removing the notch. While the Pixel 3 used larger bezels and the Pixel 3 XL had the same central notch as the iPhone, this year both models are the same, leaving only their dimensions.

Google has chosen to keep the upper bezel to hide the selfie camera with a full range of face unlock sensors, and for others involved with radar or gesture handling functionality.

The screen has also undergone an interesting update, which is none other than 90Hz refresh rate support, although it is dynamically managed so that the phone activates only the 90Hz application and content that support it and battery power. Save.

In this way, the Pixel 4 will work most of the time with the screen at 60 Hz, a value that more respects the energy consumption on paper.

On the rest of the screen, it has an OLED panel with FullHD + resolution in the case of the Pixel 4, and a Quad HD + in the Pixel 4 XL. This will be the most important difference between the two models, apart from the difference in capacity of your battery.

Both models receive HDR support and environmental equalizer. This is a technique first adopted at Nest Hubs, which allows you to adjust brightness and color temperature to match environmental conditions similar to True Tone on Apple’s devices.

There are some other changes to highlight on the back. The double panel design has disappeared (and is accompanied by a fingerprint sensor), leaving a block of color showing the ‘G’ logo and a new square camera cutout.

Since 2019 is clearly the year of great cameras, Google joins Apple to introduce a square camera array (the size of a pixel), with both lenses, flash and autofocus sensors, all in the same box.

I agree, the appearance is to some extent, but at least the new design keeps the rest of the phone clean and uniform and, in the end, completely free of fingerprints from our hands coming into contact.

And it is a design that looks modern except for the large bezel on the front screen. He does not dislike everyone equally, but there is nothing that demonstrates the huge 3XL Excel. The lower bezels of both models have also been reduced.

Camera sensors

More sensors do not produce better results. And it is for the first time, Google has introduced its Pixel with a 16MP telephoto zoom lens with a second camera lens on its back, which according to Google, would have allowed us to have an effective focal distance of 24 to 85mm is.

Pixel 3 can be said to continue the great phone camera from a point of view and shoot point of view. However, with the second lens, the Pixel 4 adds some more versatility and plays with your photos.

The main lens is similar to last year from a hardware point of view with 12.2 Mp and focal f / 1.7, but Google continues to improve results aided by software possibilities.

On one hand, the HDR Plus effect now applies to the viewfinder as well, and not just to the final shot, so what you see aligning and focusing your photos will be a guess for the end result. In fact, it allows you to manage brightness and contrast values before capturing photos.(Review Google Pixel 4 )

Specifications and features

However, as we mentioned earlier, the biggest change does not fall within the section of the picture. The main focus seems to be on the possibilities offered by Google Assistant, which is now integrated into the operating system.

Thanks to the new Pixel Neural chip focused on artificial intelligence, the device can be unlocked or interact with any application on your phone, which it apparently accelerates.

You can ask for Google support like ‘Show Buoys on Instagram’ and immediately the relevant application will open and direct you to the profile, so that with a simple conversation you can move quickly between applications such as your finger. Around to use

Google says that it should work with any application, but it is something that we can confirm after spending some time with the terminal. Another feature that can certainly facilitate everyday things, especially so repetitive.

And now it is also possible to access Google Assistant with new touch gestures, move your finger from any corner of the lower frame, which connects to the voice activation of ‘OK Google’, or the pressure (active edge) on the side. .

And this is not the only novel gesture you will find in the new Pixel 4. Google has followed in LG’s footsteps by introducing hands-free gesture controls, among others, with some manufacturers still trying to improve it. So far, no curd has been added to the users.

Google mentions that they are faster and more reliable because they are based on radar technology, rather than using a camera. Examples include waving your hand or silencing an alarm to leave the song, a quick hand gesture that can unlock the face, or activate an appearance detector that closes around the screen.

Not all applications will be compatible with gesture controls, although at least Spotify is, so there is a support plan for third-party development. A dim glow from the top of the screen lets you know when the control is supported.(Review Google Pixel 4 )

The Pixel 4 is included on the Snapdragon 855 chipset (notes the difference compared to the new 855+) with 6GB of RAM and 64 or 128GB storage options.

The battery in the Pixel 4 is 2800 mAh (somewhat disappointing if we look honestly) compared to 3700 mAh in the Pixel 4 XL, although Google suggests that its adaptive battery technology will help the phone the previous day.

Nevertheless, they are of little capacity for the type of terminal in our hand, and a bit dangerous on a major device. At least Qi wireless charging support with 18W cable fast charging mode via USB-C is still maintained.

Last but not least, note that the fingerprint sensor has disappeared in the new Pixel 4 as a security measure, so we now rely only on facial recognition (never better).

Google has chosen to focus its management on Face ID using the PIN request, as Apple did on its iPhone. The point of contention here is that we have verified that the owner’s eyes are closed even when unlocked, which may lead to additional risks.

google pixel 4 review 4 1

The company has confirmed a few days after launch that an update of the software will allow this section to be included to increase security, but no date has been set for its deployment.

If you are one of those people who do not trust at all, you can always request the terminal lock to unlock the pin when you unlock it again. What we have been able to verify so far is that Face ID clearly works faster and angled, which would be impossible for you to believe.

Not to end with a vague note, but one important thing is gone: a fingerprint sensor. There is no one behind, and unlike rival Android OEMs, Google has not opted for a sensor on the screen. Instead, it’s simply gone, so this pixel is only for Face Unlock or Pin if it’s out of fashion.(Review Google Pixel 4 )

Apparently so far, the Pixel 4 does not sound like a great update, but improvements in camera interaction may be enough to help Pixel reach the crown as photography’s smartphone is king despite fierce competition this year.

On the data sheet, the Pixel 4 doesn’t seem to have enough arsenal to compete with the best in the market, but Google Assistant’s advanced integration with the operating system can implement the terminal if other Android One doesn’t succeed.(Review Google Pixel 4)
