Review: Asus ROG Zephyrus G14
The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 seems to be a cross between a gaming laptop and an ultrabook , an intriguing cross that draws attention from the first moment. The Taiwanese company surprised us with this model announced at the CES 2020 event in Las Vegas, stating that we were facing the most powerful 14-inch video game laptop in the world. After several weeks being able to personally test the laptop, we can not agree more with the statement.
Asus has managed to unite both concepts in an impressive way, all adding surprising specifications taking into account the size of the laptop. In addition, there is still room to have innovated in the design and style of the device.
We have been able to work with the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 for several weeks to be able to tell you if it is worth it or not (although you will have already been able to deduce the answer surely). We talked in depth about its design, display, performance and specifications.
Design and build quality
Although the G14 is somewhat smaller than we are used to, it still undoubtedly has that gamer touch in its design, especially due to the solidity it offers.
Considering its power, it is easily one of the most “portable” laptops out there; This is possible thanks to the mix of a meticulous thermal design on the inside and a strong magnesium-aluminum alloy shell on the outside.
The keyboard is very comfortable to use, each of the keys has enough space around it. Right now I write using this keyboard and the truth is that it turns out to be an optimal experience.
Another drawback that we have found is in reference to the backlight, since it is somewhat uneven and prone to light leaks. In my personal experience I have preferred to leave it turned off when using the laptop.
When opening the laptop lid for the first time and not seeing a camera, I hoped that it was perhaps incorporated into the keyboard, in the style of the MateBook, however, Asus has decided not to include a camera in this device.
Realistically, we rarely use a webcam, although we still wish the device did have a camera. However, nowadays it is easy to get a webcam for reasonable prices (on Amazon you will find several webcam models ).
Beyond the cooling settings and keyboard, you’re presented with a four-speaker layout (two tweeters and two woofers ) with the blessing of Dolby Atmos, a Windows Hello-compatible fingerprint sensor power button (which, let’s admit it). , could be more reliable) and a choice of three different displays.
Although the ROG brand suggests that the G14 is above all a team dedicated to gaming, the general style and hardware options hint that this is a device that can be used for much more than playing La Liga.
Something that we would also like to mention is that Asus has managed to give a very special touch to the design of this device. Although it is only available in the models with the highest specifications in the range (not the case we have been able to test), we have been struck by the technology nicknamed ‘AniMe Matrix’.
This consists of a CNC milled cover, covered with about 1215 mini LEDs. These can be configured to display text, displays, and even animated GIFs that undoubtedly give the G14 a unique and customizable touch.
However, in any other G14 SKU, the cover is simply covered in a series of small holes that, while not as surprising as the more than a thousand LEDS, still give the device a distinctive look.
Those who are looking for a gaming laptop will surely opt for the 120 Hz IPS Full HD LCD screen (the model we are talking about in this article). However, if you need a laptop to edit video or work on graphic design tasks, you probably prefer the sharper 60Hz WQHD panel that is also available (there is also a 60Hz Full HD option, but we don’t recommend missing the refresh of 120 Hz).
As we have mentioned above, we are facing a 14-inch panel with an excellent 1080p resolution. The bezels are quite thin except for the bottom frame, quite a bit thicker than the other three edges.
Our experience with the screen while using the laptop has been very positive. We have worked several days outdoors and the truth is that it still looks quite good. This is probably due to the anti-glare screen (the brightness reaches about 300 nits).
As you could expect from a device thinking partly for gaming , the G14 incorporates four speakers inside. Two of them, at the bottom, are 2.5 W and incorporate Smart AMP technology. On the sides are the two 0.7W tweeters .
The four speakers make up a Dolby Atmos sound system that offers, as is characteristic of this technology, surround sound, capable of immersing you in any video you are watching.
What is most striking is the power of the sound. On the other hand, we find strong bass, quite sharp and clear treble. If you wish, you can use an application with which you can configure and customize the sound equalization according to your personal preferences.
Performance and battery
The various display configurations and the LED matrix that has already been discussed are just two of the options to consider when configuring your new G14. Behind the scenes, there’s also room for a fairly significant set of performance tweaks, starting with the processor.
You can choose from a number of inputs within AMD’s Ryzen 4000 series chips, which is complemented by AMD’s Ryzen 9 4900HS 7nm. Asus has managed to catch the tuned 35W, 8-core, and 16-thread variant than the standard 45W version, but in this case it also benefits from smarter acceleration and higher thermal efficiency.
The list of options also allows up to 32GB of DDR4 RAM and up to 1TB of M.2 NVMe SSD storage.
Finally, there is the graphics card. Despite its size, the G14 can host up to an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 (Max-Q), offering enough power for high-performance gaming and streaming video simultaneously, if that’s your priority.
The included 180W charger unleashes the power of the discrete GPU, although the G14 supports USB-PD up to 65W as well, which means you can keep working and charging the laptop, even if you only carry the mobile charger with you.
Regarding the battery life, we can say that it is also quite surprising. Based on my experience with the laptop, the G14 lasted up to 10 and a half hours without charging.
Mention the LEDs
Price and availability
he G14 is available for pre-purchase. Depending on the SKU chosen, the price is understandably affected, with the most influential factors being the CPU, the graphics card and the display.
The starting price is € 1,499, although as we have been saying, this will depend on the type of configuration you choose.
The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 is an example of a perfect fusion between a gaming device and an ultrabook device. In addition, it shows us that the fact of having reduced the size of the device does not mean that it has to be less powerful.
It offers an unbeatable balance between portability and power, in a way that no other device with similar characteristics has yet achieved, especially considering the price range it offers.
We have loved its performance, the solidity of its design, its battery life, the quality of Dolby sound and, in summary, its incredible specifications collected in a device with a 14-inch screen.
