Honor, as a subsidiary brand of Huawei, continues to suffer from the impediments imposed by the United States, which does not prevent the phone maker from continuing to develop frankly outstanding smartphones that this time will arrive in the form of the V40 series.
The company’s V-series devices have come to serve as the cream of the crop as part of the brand’s annual launch portfolio, offering top-notch performance, and complemented by powerful cameras.
Honor routinely pulls the best out of Huawei’s phone catalog and then twists and turns those devices until they fall for lower-priced models by applying small compromises that users tend to care less about.
Huawei itself has confirmed that it continues to sell Honor, phones that would have been in development for months before finally going on sale. This could mean that they are the latest Honor flagships, which will still be released under the Huawei umbrella.
When will the Honor V40 series be released?
It has finally been confirmed that the new HOnor V40 series will be launched on January 18, although it is expected that this event will only focus on the Chinese version of the phone, without having details about the editions for the rest of the world.
Arriving a little later than last year’s V30 line (which landed on November 26, 2019), Weibo’s rumors about its possible launch at the end of December last year have finally not been fulfilled.
How much will the Honor V40 cost?
The V30 series came with three different models, the V30, the V30 Pro and the V30 Pro + with prices that were at the time of launch of € 390, 515 and 645 respectively. In this way, the brand has been increasing the prices of the previous generation by 12% year after year.
Assuming this equivalent for the new models, everything will depend on the chip that the new V40 has finally implemented, since it is not certain that the new series contains the all-powerful Kirin 9000 processor model inside.
In this way, if the V40 had the MediaTek chip capable of rivaling the Snapdragon 865 itself, the V40 series could have moderate prices that would vary between € 449 for the most basic model, and € 699 for the top Pro + model.
What will be the design of the V40?
Honor has released an official image of the V40, so at least we know what the front of a model will look like, although there is nothing unexpected: a curved screen, slim bezels and dual camera setup for the selfie section .
As for the rear, a leaked render reveals a device that is strikingly similar to the Huawei Mate 40 in design, although we don’t know which of the V40 models it is supposed to be.
The circular rear camera module, supposedly inspired by mechanical watches, is similar to Huawei’s recent flagship designs. You can also see a curved front screen with the same dual selfie camera cutout seen in the official render.
On the other hand, a Weibo leak hints at a completely different camera module, reminiscent of the Huawei Nova 8 Pro, so the circular design may be completely wrong.
What features does the Honor V40 offer?
The V40 series is expected to consist of three devices (up from the two models in last year’s V30 line): Honor V40, Honor V40 Pro, and Honor V40 Pro +.
In addition to providing a window of release dates for the V40 series, the prestigious Chinese technology blogger Dragon Two Pro and the source Weibo highlight that the specification sheet would be composed as follows.
They both mention a 120Hz high refresh rate Full HD + display with a double-hole front camera setup, a 50MP main camera with RYYB pixels, and impressive 66W wired charging, along with fast wireless charging. 40 W.
The source never mentions which device these specs belong to, but makes the distinction that one device will come with Huawei’s latest 5nm Kirin 9000 chipset, while another will use MediaTek’s Dimensity 1000+ SoC.
However, that prediction has been questioned by another Chinese insider, Digital Chat Station , who claims that the V40 series will not feature the Kirin 9000. It was initially unclear if this could be due to a shortage of stocks within Huawei.
This leak also provided a codename for the V40 series in “YORK” with the model number YOK-AN10 attached to one of the expected devices.
Previous leaks (via MyFixGuide ) suggested that only the V40 Pro + will benefit from that 120Hz refresh rate, while the other two models will be downgraded to more modest 90Hz displays.
All models will supposedly employ a 32 MP front camera, and only the Pro + will sport a secondary ToF sensor. The Kirin 9000 chip was originally expected to be reserved for the Plus model, while MediaTek’s would power the V40 and V40 Pro.
With this latest development taking the Kirin out of setup, there’s a chance the Pro + will arrive later, come with a Dimensity 1000+, or won’t finally launch, although it’s still too early to venture speculation.
Will the new Honor V40 have Google Play services?
The main reason Huawei sold the Honor brand was so that it could prosper again, free from the restrictions imposed on Huawei by the US government. Perhaps the most burdensome thing for the company’s smartphone business was the fact that that the trade ban prevents the company from partnering with Google for the software.
This means that while Huawei phones still run the open source Android, they cannot use Google Mobile Services (GMS), which in turn means that they cannot access the Google Play Store to install applications.
With Honor’s new status as its own company, in theory, future Honor phones will be able to run GMS and thus have a full Android experience once again. Will this start in time for the V40 series?
Unfortunately at this time we do not know. Honor hasn’t officially commented yet, which hopefully just means it’s saving the good news for the phone’s official launch. Either way, we will know more very soon.
