Sony Xperia 5 Review: First Impressions

Another year, Sony has been present at one of the IFA 2019: Technical events held in Berlin. This version has been particularly quiet for the Japanese company, but they have time to introduce a new smartphone.

This is the new Sony Xperia 5, which is nothing more than the smaller and cheaper version of its flagship Xperia 1, which went on sale last spring. Read on to know our first impression.

Price and availability

The new Xperia 5 will officially go on sale next October. For example, in the United Kingdom, it will be released on the 5th, but in other markets in Europe (including Spain), it is still unknown.

Although some sources state that it will cost € 799, the truth is that Sony has not yet confirmed what the official price will be. Which is known that it will come with Sony WF-1000 XM3 Wireless Headphones.

In any case, everything indicates that the price will be over € 700, which in our view indicates that it is a high-end model. For other cheap models, you can check our ranking of the best Sony phones.

Design and manufacturing quality

Sony Xperia 5 is a smaller version of the flagship of the company Xperia 1. This does not mean that it does not introduce some differences, such as the fact that the card slot and rear camera are gone.

Also, everything will seem the same but in a mini version. In addition, you will feel that you have a premium device in your hands, although fingerprints will remain on the back. It is available in black, blue and brown.

Performance and specifications

The main aspect of the Xperia 5 is that it has a smaller screen than the Xperia 1. Thus, this results from the 6.5-inch panel being a 6.1-inch panel, possibly a more attractive size for many people.

Of course, Sony is still betting on its odd aspect ratio: 21: 9. Furthermore, the panel is still OLED, although it now has full HD + resolution instead of 4K. All in all, it still presents crisp and clear colors.

If you look at its internal components, there are some changes. It retains the Snapdragon 855 processor with 6 GB of RAM. It also has 128 GB storage, which can be extended with a microSD card.

Even the cameras are similar, though they are now on the left side of the back instead of the center. Thus, the Xperia 5 has triple rear camera with main lens, ultra wide angle and 12MP telephoto lens. Up front, it maintains an 8MP lens.

This does not mean that there is no news. The Xperia 5 includes some new features, such as the possibility of using i AF mode to improve burst. Also, the frame rate is now 30 fps instead of 10 fps.

The Xperia 5 camera has now become smart and will let you know when you notice that something is covering the lens or when the person you are going to photograph has your eyes closed. You can also create more professional projects with Cinema Pro.

For added convenience, the new Sony smartphone is compatible with the Imagine Edge app that allows you to transfer pictures from Sony Alpha or cyber-shot cameras. It will be very easy to edit and share them later on your social network.

Now, Xperia 5 is compatible with DualShock 4, which means that you can use the PlayStation controller to play on your mobile. This compatibility will also come soon for Xperia 1 handheld software updates.

You may be disappointed to learn that Sony also did not want to include the headphone jack port on this model, although it has a stereo speaker and a fingerprint scanner on the side.

Compared to the previous flagship, the Xperia 5 has lower battery capacity, although the difference is much smaller. Thus, it has a 3140 mAh battery instead of 3300 mAh. Changing the screen resolution will add 5 hold more battery.

Early verdict

Do you think Xperia 1 is too big and expensive? Good news: a more compact and affordable version of the Sony flagship. The Xperia 5 is a good phone with good specifications and interesting features.

Of course, if you want a cheaper mobile and do not think that it is not Sony, then you can find it easily and with better features.
