First impressions: Excellent Review Acer Swift 5 (2019)
Acer announced its new Swift 5 laptop at IFA, which, according to specifications, fully entered the market with leading brands such as Dell XPS 13, HP NV13 or Apple MacBook Air.
Acer keeps it as the lightest 14-inch laptop in the world, but can it become your laptop every day? Our analysis is after our interaction in the final version of IFA 2019.
In general, the Swift has a lot to offer with very balanced features. That is, a lightweight design and powerful specifications with small bezels on the screen that take advantage of the latest generation of processors and graphics chips.
In fact, it comes with a tenth generation Intel processor and even Nvidia dedicated graphics option. We recommend you to have a look at our article on this year’s best laptop.
Recall that the Swift 5 has set the bar very high as it is one of the products selected.
Price and availability
The commercialization of the Acer Swift 5 will be available in Spain from the month of September, with a recommended price for the configuration of the most basic model of € 999. For its part, the price of the Swift 3, which has also been updated, is € 599.
Design and build quality
We all want a laptop to be lightweight and compact in addition to maintaining the highest performance, and this is something that the Swift 5 knows to do well. Its thickness is only 14.95 mm and its weight is less than 990 grams, so it can go unnoticed in any bag or backpack. The model will also be lighter without the Nvidia graphic.
Acer has manufactured it with materials of magnesium-lithium and magnesium-aluminum in its finish, which can bring it closer to a touch of plastic than metal, which doesn’t stop what you normally think You have a premium handheld device. We like the color blue with golden highlights.
The fingerprint sensor is also small because the bezels around the screen are fully exploited. With a thickness of only 3.97 mm, the Swift 5 looks elegant and modern. In general, the screen-to-body ratio reaches a value of 86.4%.
As with the Dell XPS 13 model (from which you can check our review here), the webcam is to avoid the uncomfortable view on the screen that it receives below or even on a pop-up key, which Huawei Has been on some of their models.
Despite being quite slim, Acer has managed to offer a laptop with different ports. While many rivals do not offer more than one of the USB-C types (or sometimes just), the Swift 5 includes full-size HDMI and USB-A outputs.
It is also compatible with Thunderbolt 3 through the USB-C 3.1 port, and the fingerprint scanner that complements the Windows Hello unlock system through facial recognition.
Specifications and features
Acer has equipped the Swift 5 with some powerful specifications that start with Intel tenth generation processors. You can choose up to 512 GB of storage in Core i7-1065G7 and SSD format. The model that we had in our hands came with 8 GB RAM.
Some models will also come with dedicated graphics in the form of Nvidia MX250 chip. It can also be found in rivals such as the Huawei MateBook 14, which makes it powerful enough to fly photos and edit videos on the fly.
The screen is generous, 14 inches, and offers a full HD resolution. It appears to be quite colorful and shiny and benefits from a matte finish. The model we tested also had touch management for interacting with Windows 10.
In addition to the ports and fingerprint scanners mentioned above, the Swift 5 supports WiFi 6 (the new standard 11 GB). When it comes to battery life, Acer says that you can use 12.5 hours. We will see how it behaves in our laboratory.
Fast charging also means that you can use up to 4.5 hours with just 30 minutes of charging.
After some driving time, there is actually very little that you may not like about the Acer Swift 5.
It is a very balanced laptop in design, specifications and price. It is priced at € 999 for the most basic configuration with an incentive to be inside the latest generation chips.
Among the powerful models we’ve seen are the tenth generation Intel Core i7, 512GB SSD, and Nvidia MX250 graphics, meaning you can compete with the flagship models of Dell, HP, and Apple.
It all comes within an elegant and lightweight chassis and a variety of ports, which will allow you to get the most out of the equipment.
