Review of the Asus ZenFone 6
Asus announced its ZenFone 6 at an event in Valencia, in which we were surprised by this device which was able to offer something different and original compared to other new high-end models in the market.
It has a great screen design, and a simple camera system that is positioned upside down (flip camera) so that the same camera configuration can be used both back and front.
But can we say that Asus has managed to understand the perfect formula for screen designs without wives or knots? We have been able to test smartphones for a long time, and this is what we think.
Price and availability
You can buy Asus ZenFone 6 on the official Asus website. Prices vary according to the gigabyte of memory and RAM you choose. The cheapest option is 6 GB of RAM and € 499 for 64 storage.
There is a second option of 559 for 6 GB RAM and 128 storage, and a third option of 799 € for 12 GB RAM and 512 storage.
Several different attempts have been made by manufacturers to obtain a screen without bezels and provide access to the front camera at the same time. We have also introduced flip-cameras with notches to pop-up cameras, sliders and Asus ZenFone 6.
The changing nature of the camera module is interesting; Instead of introducing a forward-facing camera that strikes the screen, the cameras on the back of the phone can be flipped.
The module features a 48Mp Sony IMX586 sensor, with 1.6um pixels and an aperture of f / 1.79, as well as a 125-degree 13Mp wide-angle camera, laser autofocus, and a double LED flash.
The rotating nature of the camera module provides users with incredible quality front lenses and allows users to use advanced shooting modes on their front cameras, previously exclusive to rear-facing cameras.
The quality of the photos is generally excellent, with impressive clarity and detail. HDR + mode produces stunning and detailed images in difficult lighting conditions.
See image below St. Panras Hotel; Even while zooming in, you can see small details such as masonry and road signs of the building. The level of detail somewhat negates the need for telephoto lenses, as the cropped images taken by the 48Mp sensor typically look great.
The 48Mp sensor also works well in low-light environments, although it is also true that the phone’s dedicated night mode may not be provided by other flagships from brands such as Huawei, Samsung or Google. There is a decent level of light, but little sacrifice in terms of general clarity.
The 13Mp 125 degree wide angle camera is ideal for landscape photos, especially when combined with the flip tool on the phone. It works well in well-lit environments, but unfortunately, photos taken in low-light environments are significantly smaller than those taken by the 48Mp sensor.
Of course, there are a range of shooting modes that allow you to get creative with photography. One of the highlights is portrait mode, which includes post-shot refocusing. It is also effective when it recognizes an outstanding bokeh effect, an edge in shooting and shooting situations.
The possibility of panning without moving the smartphone is another innovation that this phone has introduced and which has really managed to surprise us.
One of the best features of the flip camera is manual control; You can adjust the camera angle using the volume button, which allows you to find the right angle for your photos. It also makes it easier to take pictures of animals and children, as you can position the camera at a 90-degree angle and take pictures from a horizontal position.
If you are worried about the fragility of this rotating camera you should know that the ZenFone 6 has a G sensor capable of detecting falls, which means that it will return to its original position if it is in a fall.
In addition, the gear system should be optimal for more than 100,000 turns, which equals 28 selections every day for 5 years.
We have not yet mentioned the impressive set of video tools at your disposal with ZenFone 6. The highlight is the possibility of recording at 4K @ 60fps with electronic image stabilization.
The videos are smooth, high-quality and produce a cinematic sweep rather than a wobily panorama, though EIS has a cost: a rather cropped shot.
You also have a slow motion mode that offers 480fps at 720p or 240fps at 1080p. However, the promise of 480 fps in slow motion is a bit hollow, as we have seen frame drops and leaps during test recording in this mode.
We are happy to report that we did not find the same faults when recording at 240 fps, suggesting that the camera and on-board technology simply do not function at processing 480 images per second. Asus Zenfone 6 smartphone
There is also a tracking mode that uses the camera’s flippy nature to position the subject in the shot. To select a subject simply tap on the screen and the camera will follow it when you reach the edge of the capture area.
It is the ideal shooting mode for filming subjects that move fast, such as children and animals, and it works amazingly well.
We can’t deny it: The Asus ZenFone 6 is an elegant device, featuring a 6.4-inch bezel-less display with sixth-generation Corning Gorilla Glass and a curved back that’s suited to the contours of the hand, making it comfortable goes. Use with just one hand. Asus Zenfone 6 smartphone
On the back, you’ll find a fairly standard fingerprint sensor under the flip camera set, with the Asus brand logo.
True it is slightly thicker than other smartphones, it measures 159.1 x 75.4 x 9.2 mm and 190 grams, but the curved back helps hide its thickness in a way in which we hardly notice the difference. .
The phone comes in two variants; a rather generic Midnight Black (midnight black), and a more striking white to blue gradient called Twilight Silver, with a matching metal band. Asus Zenfone 6 smartphone
We cannot forget to mention that there is a 3.5 mm headphone port and also a notification LED.
Specifications and tools
The ZenFone 6 is undoubtedly an attractive phone, but not everything is a mask. We cannot ignore that brilliant FHD + screen enabled for HDR10; With 6.4 inches and a high aspect ratio of 19: 5: 9, it is bright, crisp, detailed and has an incredibly 92% screen-to-body ratio.
And more importantly, it is free of thick bezels, notches or perforations for the selfie camera, giving you a unique and unobtrusive viewing experience, such as companies like Apple, Samsung or Google, not just offering She does.
However, that did not deter Asus, including stereo speakers to complete the premium experience.
Below the screen, you will find the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor with Adreno 640 GPU, with 6 or 8 GB RAM and 128 or 256 GB UFS 2.1 storage, depending on the variant you choose (there is also a cheaper version) 6 / 64 GB). If integrated storage is not enough, you can extend it up to 1TB via the microSD card slot.
This should be more than enough for any application or game on Android to work with little or no delay, and we must acknowledge that we have in any way with 8GB / 256GB variants during our time Has not experienced recession. Asus Zenfone 6 smartphone
This is also supported by our benchmark results, as the ZenFone 6 gives similar results to high-end smartphones including the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus and Huawei P30 Pro.
The Zenfone 6 stands out in the battery department with an incredible 5,000 mAh battery that, according to Asus, can provide two days of standard usage, 26 days standby, 33.3 hours of talk time, or 21 web browsing hours. .
We have verified that we can spend 15 hours a day with standard usage (browse, take photos, send text messages, etc.) and go to bed with about 40 percent of the battery remaining, (this is a dream in 2019 ).
In addition, Quick Charge 4.0 can provide users with a faster charging experience. It is a pity that the 18W charger is not included in the box.
Zenfone 6 also has great power in terms of connectivity: USB-C connectivity with reverse charging as well as 4G LTE, Bluetooth 5, dual band Wi-Fi, NFC, a set of GPS systems and even FM radio functionality. also for. Fast normal wireless charging is not present here.
And, as with most Android-based smartphones currently being launched, the Asus ZenFone 6 carries the Android 9.0 Pie, but distinguishes itself from the crowd by guaranteeing updates to not only Android Q, but Android R in 2020 is.
It is also part of Google’s Android beta program, which allows users to subscribe to experimental versions of Android before launch.
While this may not look like it, the smartphone has a custom ZenUI. While keeping Android’s presence in stock, there are improvements available to users, such as the ability to double-tap the screen to activate it, adjusting the volume automatically based on the environment, a dark mode throughout the system Enabling and, our personal favorite: the ability to access the notification screen with the fingerprint sensor slide on the back. Asus Zenfone 6 smartphone
Asus Zenfone 6 is one of our favorite smartphones of 2019; Instead of following the trend of notices and perforated camera cutouts, Asus has implemented an innovative flip camera system that provides a high-end shooting experience in the rear and front, without compromising on screen space.
Captured images are detailed and vibrant, and although Night Mode doesn’t work as well with some rivals, it’s a minor complaint in a camera system that would otherwise be impressive. The range of video modes and the ability to record at 4K @ 60fps with EIS is also a good explanation.
Beyond the camera settings, the Zenfone 6 is an impressive kit; It has a curved back that fits perfectly in the palm of your hand, a bright design and, more importantly, a 6.4-inch full screen free of bevels and notches. And with a 5,000 mAh battery that provides comfortable use throughout the day, there’s not much to complain about.
