Excellcnt Review of the Sony Xperia 1
Sony Xperia 1: is it worth your purchase?
Punctuation: 4.5 Rating
At first glance, the new Sony Xperia 1 seems somewhat unusual, partly because of its long aspect of 21: 9. However, in reality this dimension is a very smart condition by Sony used in movies and Netflix.
This long screen can be very useful when used for a long time, because you can use two apps at the same time. For example, you can watch a video at the top and send a message to someone below.
He said, the Japanese company will need more to return to the mainstream. In any case, this is a premium quality smartphone that we prefer above all the designs, triple cameras and HDR 4K OLED screens, which are the first in the market.

Review of the Sony Xperia 1
To surprise many people, Sony has changed the name of the smartphone presented in MWC Barcelona this year. Leaving this, important thing is to know what you have been able to do with them.
It is a pity that the Japanese company is not fully present in the field of mainstream Android smartphones because the truth is that it builds good terminals, and Sony Xperia 1 is an example of this.
With Xperia 1, Sony has changed the design again, in this case betting for a longer aspect ratio. In addition, your HDR 4K OLED camera is the first of its kind used in smartphones.
We also appreciate it, like some of its rivals, it has also opted for triple camera option. If you want to know why we are confident of the new Sony model, do not miss our full range of hardware and software reviews.
Price and availability
Sony Xperia 1 has a price of € 949 in Spain, which is more than what we expect. Its price is higher than the previous model, Sony Xperia XZ3, which was put on sale for sale at the € 799 base price.
Sony has done the same with the Xperia 1 and HDR 4K OLED panels after presenting the first HC4K LCD screen on the smartphone in its Xperia XZ premium model. This is another achievement of Sony in the field of screen.
The resolution of the screen is 3840 x 1644 and the pixel density is 643. It’s as great as the Galaxy S10, considered to be the best in the industry, though it does not have such great visibility in a bright environment.
The decision to bet with an unusual aspect of 21: 9 on the panel is reasonable with the idea that Xperia 1 should be able to see the films recorded in this aspect, as we find in Netflix.
In addition, it is also useful to split the screen and to use two apps at the same time. In this sense, you can reply to a message or watch a map in Google Maps while watching a YouTube video at the top.
In part, thanks to the absence of a notch on this 6.5-inch screen is obtained. In this sense, the distribution of front camera and speaker makes it like the continuation of the Xperia XZ1 model compared to XZ2 or XZ3.
The company’s first OLED screen is in XZ3 of 2018 and its quality was already very good. The new terminal includes better calibration and good color reproduction. In addition, 4K videos look very good.
Sony has added a new screen configuration that uses the SINLATA technology, which is found in the latest range of video cameras. This allows you to watch videos with excellent color reproduction and high dynamic range.
The company also offers software that improves video quality. Pictures are clear for its new X1 image processing system. It’s a great experience to watch videos all in Xperia 1.
These novelties on the screen are also reflected in the design of the terminal. Unless you are going to take advantage of the aspect of 21: 9, there is no doubt that the long shape of Xperia 1 is somewhat rare and most likely you need to use both hands.
Manipulation is not difficult, but you should try to find balance if you are going to use only one hand. We celebrate, yes, that Sony has come back to use a physical fingerprint sensor on the side, but for that it had to add a new button.
Very good answer, maybe too much. You will often find that, while holding the smartphone, Xperia 1 will be unlocked by mistake when you locate your finger on the fingerprint scanner. If you do not want this you should be careful.
Even in terms of design, we can not deny that there are too many buttons in the right side or the terminal is somewhat elusive. In fact, it is very slippery and you should not leave it on any surface which is not flat.
Despite some strange dimensions, after some days of use, this design has convinced us. What’s more, we’ve become so accustomed to returning to our iPhone that Apple’s smartphone looks smaller and more compact than before.
Maybe you have not finished to explain the color of Xperia 1 we have tried. This is a purple color reminiscent of the original Xperia Z. In any case, you can buy it in black, white and even gray.
While Sony shines on its cameras, it’s slightly behind other manufacturers with the quality of cameras on their smartphones. This shows that not only does the hardware matter, but the software is also crucial.
Xperia 1 is Sony’s first smartphone with triple rear camera: Main sensor of 12 MP (f / 1.6), Telephoto lens of 12 MP (f / 2.4) and 12 MP ultra wide-angle (f / 2.4). You will have a better zoom but ultra wide-angle pulls the Fiji effect.
So far, Xperia’s cameras were located far behind their rivals, but this is a little opposite with the new smartphone, because it makes excellent photos in all kinds of situations. Of course, good results are not easily received.
In this sense, you will not have a camera like an iPhone XS or Pixel 3, whose automatic mode is excellent and allows you to take good pictures without much effort. With Sony, you have to touch settings.
In our case, we have found that we had to focus several photos again by touching the screen or using the camera shutter. Apart from this, the results end with a lot of exposure or too dark.
Perhaps this is due to our photographic capabilities, but this is the question. With Pixel 3 you do not need to know a lot about photography to get excellent results, while not so much with Xperia 1.
On the other hand, when you click on Settings, you will be able to take great photos, filled with details and without too much color saturation. Of course, the pictures taken in the macro may be some blurry.
It appears that there is no separate night mode as we find in other smartphones of similar value, which is a matter of shame. However, photos taken in low light environments work well, especially compared to the previous Sony models.
You can see the results in this gallery.
For the video, it seems that Sony is so confident in its prospects that she has incorporated the Cinema Pro app to record the video in manual mode. This means that you will have only good results if you have knowledge of video in cinematographic cameras.
However, and as is when using the main camera app, the results will not be optimal due to the stabilization of the video which leaves a lot to be desired, and Sony has included a hybrid of OIS (optical) And EIS (electronic).
All are good that the cameras from behind us disappear in the front camera, the total disaster. 8 MP (f / 2.0) sensor may look good, but impossible to disable, makes the Beauty mode photo blurred and obscure.
Good specifications (minus the battery)
There’s a great deal in Xperia 1: This will allow you to do any work without having too much effort for the Snapdragon 855 processor. However, battery life is very disappointing and not up to the latest range of smartphones.
Given that there is an OLED 4K HDR screen, the 3300mAh battery is not powerful enough. You will see that you are very aware of the remaining battery percent, although to be honest this has lasted till the end of the day.
In the Benchmarking Test we submitted it, it lasted for 8 hours and 4 minutes, Behind the Huawei P30 Pro for 11 hours and 45 minutes. True, this is not the industry’s worst battery, which is about 3 hours less than the European version of the Galaxy S10 Plus.
Except this, we have no complaints about the performance of Xperia 1. It’s incredibly fast, just behind OnePlus 7 Pro and this is because the latter knows how to manage its RAM better.
Beauty is in the details
While the Sony Xperia 1 has some new features that we must celebrate. For example, the quality of the calls is exceptional, something that is not always the case in the most modern smartphones .
In addition, the Xperia 1 has a water resistance certificate of IP68, which means that you can use it in the shower to listen to your favorite podcast. Of course, stereo speakers prioritize high-pitched sounds too much.
This can be compensated by using the headphones included in the box, although they look cheap and do not stand out for their audio quality. You can connect them using Bluetooth or with the adapter that is also included, since the phone does not have a jack port .
Although the glass housing could have been used to include wireless charging, the truth is that it is not. According to Sony, the inclusion of this technology would have made the terminal thicker and preferred to bet on a fine design.
Personally we do not miss that function, but we could have included it considering the price of more than € 900. It also does not include facial recognition, something that surprises us although it is still in the line of mobile phones with Android Stock.
Finally, Sony has retained the Side Sense function of the XZ3, but has not improved it. You can use it by touching on the sides of the screen twice and you will be presented with a menu of recently used apps, a menu of options, among others.
Sony Xperia 1 is a smartphone that fits in the 2019 mobile industry. It has one of the best screens seen on mobile, better cameras, good performance and practical and beautiful software.
If you prefer the unique design of Xperia 1, which will allow you to watch movies recorded in 21: 9 format, then you can not miss other tasks such as face recognition or unlocking wireless charging.
The long design will not make everyone happy, but at least it shows that Sony has admitted that it can not make a phone for the general public. This mobile is designed for lovers of video and film and they manage to offer everything they need.
